History of the Ghana Stock Exchange

The Ghana Stock Exchange was incorporated on 23 July 1989 as a private company limited by guarantee under the Companies Code of Ghana. It commenced trading operations on 12 November 1990, making it one of the oldest stock exchanges in sub-Saharan Africa.

In its early years the GSE grew steadily as major Ghanaian banks, consumer goods companies and industrial firms sought public listings. The exchange adopted an Automated Trading System (ATS) to replace floor-based trading, improving transparency and price discovery for Ghana shares.

Today the Ghana Stock Exchange lists approximately 38 equities across sectors including banking, insurance, manufacturing, oil & gas, agriculture, telecoms and consumer goods, alongside corporate and government bonds. The exchange operates under the supervision of the Securities and Exchange Commission Ghana (SEC Ghana).

In 2013 the GSE launched the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX), a sub-market designed to give small and medium-sized enterprises access to capital markets under simplified listing requirements.

Ghana Stock Exchange Indices

GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI)

The GSE Composite Index is the headline benchmark for the Ghana Stock Exchange. It is a market capitalisation-weighted index that measures the overall performance of all equities listed on the GSE. The GSE-CI is widely quoted as the primary indicator of Ghana stock market performance.

GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI)

The GSE Financial Stocks Index tracks the performance of banking and insurance stocks listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. Because financial sector companies account for a large share of total GSE market capitalisation, the GSE-FSI is a key indicator for investors focused on Ghana's financial services sector.

Ghana Alternative Market (GAX)

The Ghana Alternative Market (GAX) is a second-tier market of the Ghana Stock Exchange, established in 2013 to provide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with access to public equity capital under lighter listing requirements than the main board.

Companies on the GAX are subject to the same SEC Ghana oversight and trade through the same ATS as main board equities, but face lower minimum capital requirements and simplified disclosure rules to encourage Ghanaian SME participation in the capital markets.

Regulation — Securities and Exchange Commission Ghana

The Ghana Stock Exchange and all capital market participants — stockbrokers, investment advisers, fund managers and listed companies — are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission Ghana (SEC Ghana).

SEC Ghana was established under the Securities Industry Act (SIA) and is responsible for licensing market participants, enforcing disclosure requirements, protecting investors and promoting the development of Ghana's capital markets.
